Bl George Matulaitis-Matulewicz

The Sixth World Apostolic Congress on Mercy has just concluded in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Chris Sparks has been struck by the dense, thickly layered web of connections and meaning to it in this particular year, in that particular place.

We honor and remember Bl. George Matulaitis, “Father Renovator,” on his 155th birthday on April 13.

This week marked two milestones. Eighty years ago, on Jan. 27, 1945, Allied troops entered the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland, and liberated the prisoners. And 98 years ago, on Jan. 27, 1927, Blessed George Matulaitis, the Renovator of the Congregation of Marian Fathers, died. His episcopal motto, “Overcome evil with good,” resonates.

A new daily podcast by Fr. Joe Roesch, MIC!

THE JOURNAL OF BLESSED GEORGE MATULAITIS-MATULEWICZ, Renovator of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Join Fr. Joe Roesch, MIC, as he reads from the journal of Blessed George Matulaitis-Matulewicz (1871-1927), the “Renovator” of the Congregation of Marian Fathers. As both a bishop and archbishop, Blessed George was recognized for his work as an apostle of unity during tumultuous times in his native Lithuania. Throughout his life, he launched important initiatives that mobilized the laity for the greater good of the Church. And without Blessed George, there would be no Marian Congregation today.

We are called to patriotism, to love of country, of culture, of people, even as we also love our neighbors in other countries, other nations, and other peoples.

Each and every parish is larger than just the people you see next to you in the pew each Sunday at Mass. Love your neighbors — all of them.

The Renovator of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception offers us a beautiful way to unplug from the world and attach ourselves slowly but surely to God.

January 27 is the feast day of Blessed George Matulaitis. Here is the challenge he set for all of us.

In his service as the Renovator of the Marian Congregation, Blessed George brought back a religious congregation on the brink of death.
